Portola steps up on the Gridiron

Portola High School, coached by former Irvine High star Peter Abe, launched its first varsity football season on Aug. 17th with a 39-20 victory over rival Fairmont Prep. Portola’s Kaveh Wojtowich embodied the team’s pedigree, scoring the first touchdown of the season with a 42-yard pass from Brandon Yue.

“The program has been working hard to take deliberate steps every day, every play to grow as a varsity football program and develop student athletes who will rise to the expectations of our Bulldog pedigree,” Abe said.

Irvine girls softball reaches new heights

It was a great finish for the Irvine Girls Softball Association 10-and-under gold softball team, which took third place at the USA National Softball Fast-Pitch Championships.

The team, coached by Greg Sasaki, finished the all-star season with a 36-8 record.

Sasaki said the finish is the highest for an IGSA softball team in any age division in the 20-year history of the organization.

The coaching staff consisted of Jay Tamkoc, Rich Song, Casey Harris, Greg Sasaki and team parent Audra Heimann.
