Two Irvine High School students were named Student Athletes of Character by the Orange County Athletic Directors Association.

Kate Fong and Dany Frukacz were recognized among a field of 100 high school nominees for exemplifying ethical behavior on and off the field of play.

Fong served as captain of the Irvine High School water polo team. She won the Coaches Award and was selected by her teammates for the Compass Award.

Academically, she earned a 4.0 grade-point average while carrying a course-load of advanced classes.

She also served as president of Irvine High’s Make-A-Wish club.

“Kate’s commitment to excellence as an athlete, her academic performance, and her devotion to school and community make her worthy of this honor,” said Irvine water polo and swimming coach Crystal Hinman.

Dany Frukacz has been a standout in both football and basketball. On the football field, he pushed himself to help the team, playing on both sides of the ball as a free safety and running back.

He earned this season’s Coaches Award.

“Dany represents everything that is right about Irvine football,” said Erik Terry, former football coach and spring athletic director. “He is honorable, reliable, respectful, committed and team-oriented. He is an above-average student, a very good athlete and, most important, a great teammate.”
