Irvine swim league resumes

Irvine’s village-based swim program for boys and girls opens June 6.

Irvine’s village-based swim program for boys and girls opens June 6. The Irvine Swim League’s 22 teams compete at community pools throughout the summer, culminating with a championship meet on Aug. 13.

Over the years, several competitors have made Olympic trials, including former Colony Red Hots swimmer Amanda Beard, who went on to become a seven-time Olympic medalist.

Since forming in 1985, the league has provided a recreational and developmental swim program for Irvine youth, ages 5-18, with an emphasis on water safety, stroke instruction and individual improvement. Competitions are equal parts community social events (almost like big pool parties) and good-natured competition.
