The Los Angeles-based contemporary dance company BodyTraffic, known for its stunning dancers and technical mastery, will perform at Irvine Barclay Theatre on May 15. We asked Artistic Director Tina Finkelman Berkett about the upcoming show.
How do you engage new dance audiences?
Through music. I feel people have an easier time taking in music, and dance feels a little more intimidating. Second to that is helping people better understand that BT is a place where the dancers embody a lot of athleticism and very challenging physicality. They are sort of superhuman athletes, and I think people have always been viscerally moved by witnessing great feats of human ability.
Which piece are you most excited to share with Irvine audiences?
“Mayday” by Trey McIntyre. It’s an extraordinary work of choreography – poetic, emotionally resonant and set to the iconic music of Buddy Holly, whose spirit and story seem to pulse through every moment. The piece not only highlights the dancers’ incredible technical skill but also reveals the depth of their character and artistry.
What do you hope audiences take away from the show?
My hope is they feel more alive, more awake, inspired and connected than when they walked into the theater. I want the experience to spark something in them, to ignite a curiosity that draws them back to live performance again and again.
