Each summer, UC Irvine’s fields, courts and pools come alive with the energy of thousands of young athletes. This year, up to 2,700 campers are expected to participate in UC Irvine Sports Camps – a summer tradition blending athletic training with lessons in personal growth.
The camps are led by NCAA Division I coaches and collegiate athletes, offering opportunities to train at a high level while building foundational life skills.
“We offer a comprehensive program that teaches more than the fundamentals of a sport,” says Gerald D. Parham, director of program development for UCI Intercollegiate Athletics. “We are intentional about instilling transferable life skills focusing on the principles of the C.L.E.A.R. Academy, which include character, leadership, education, advocacy and responsibility.”
Each day typically begins with warmup drills and group conversations centered around aspects of C.L.E.A.R. Academy principles. In the afternoon, campers train and compete.
Research supports the idea that when the teaching of life skills is intentional and integrated into skill development, the long-term impact can be significant.
“We want to provide an opportunity for youth to have a positive experience, learn more about the sports they enjoy and enhance their skills in a safe and welcoming environment,” Parham says. “The teaching of transferable life skills and the repetitive nature of how we communicate those principles will make a difference in their growth and development.”
