BECKMAN H.S.
Girls volleyball starts strong
Beckman’s girls volleyball team has started well, compiling a 19-7 overall record and earning a No. 40 ranking in the first CIF poll.
“We have started pretty strong,” coach Darin McBain says. “We would love to find ourselves in a fight for the league championship.”
Junior middle blocker Brooklyn Hamilton has led the way.
“She is already close to breaking our all-time single-season blocking record,” McBain says.
PORTOLA H.S.
Bulldogs go 4-1 to open season
Portola’s boys football team had impressive nonleague wins over Woodbridge, University, Beckman and Northwood to kick off the season.
Senior quarterback Orion Suttle was near perfect with one incompletion in 11 attempts for 235 yards and three touchdown passes in the first game. Other top players on offense were Pierson Waters, Jamal Abdelkarim, Blaise Williams and Carter Nguyen.
WOODBRIDGE H.S.
Big win for girls football
Woodbridge’s girls flag football team looks like a contender for the Pacific Coast League title. The Warriors started league play with a 59-12 victory over crosstown rival Northwood.
Quarterback Delia Stone led the Warriors, completing 29 of 37 passes for 307 yards.
“She did a great job spreading the ball around,” coach Mark Thompson says. “Our goal for the rest of the season is to put ourselves in a position to win the league and build momentum heading into playoffs.”
