Irvine softball squad wins championship
The Irvine Girls Softball Association 10-and-under all-star softball team, coached by Greg Sasaki, brought home the Central District Championship Tournament title last month and was crowned the Orange County champion.
The squad defeated West Grove 3-1 and 10-2 to claim the title. In the championship game, catcher Abby Sasaki hit a first-inning two-run home run and later delivered a 2-run single to put Irvine ahead to stay. It’s the third time in a row the team has won the title.
Irvine Ranch Little League wins district title
Irvine Ranch Little League captured this year’s District 55 title. The team includes manager Doug Euper; coaches Mike Amundson and Chris Maher; and players Jake Amundson, Blaine Anderson, Kyle Brody, Isaac Carpenter, Brody Connors, Garrett Davidson, Casey Euper, Ethan Golan, Jake Haruki, Nathaniel Kim, Brandon McMullens, Wylan Moss, Chase Quezada and Sam Tucci.
Huntington Valley Little League defeated Irvine Ranch in the sectionals to advance to the state tournament.

Former Vaquero reunited with coach
Peter Abe, the head coach of Portola’s football team, was reunited with his former coach at Irvine, Terry Henigan, during a recent retirement ceremony for former University football coach Mark Cunningham. Abe played at Irvine from 1997 to 2001 and was on the Vaqueros CIF championship football team, coached by Henigan, in 2000. Now, he’s preparing Portola for its first varsity season.
Portola’s first varsity game is Friday, Aug. 17 vs. Fairmont Prep at 7 p.m. at Portola.
