UCI grad Jon Lovitz returns for night of comedy

Former “Saturday Night Live” star Jon Lovitz returned to his alma mater, UC Irvine, on Sept. 29, for a night of stand-up comedy at the Irvine Barclay Theatre. Lovitz studied drama at UCI from 1975-1979 before starring in TV, movies and stand-up comedy performances. On “Saturday Night Live,” he created the character of Tommy Flanagan, the Pathological Liar, who finished all of his stories with the line, “Yeah, that’s the ticket.”

Irvine’s been called home by many celebrities, including:

    • Comedian Will Ferrell. He played basketball, football and soccer at University High School, where he was allowed to make the morning announcements and voted “best personality” by classmates.

    • Swimmer Amanda Beard. As an Irvine High School freshman, she won three medals at the 1996 Olympics — and was often photographed hugging a teddy bear. Before that, she swam with the Irvine Swim League’s Colony Red Hots and the Irvine Novaquatics.

  • ‘No Doubt’ guitarist Tom Dumont. He graduated from Woodbridge High School in 1986 before studying music theory at Orange Coast College and later meeting Gwen Stefani, Eric Stefani and Tony Kanai to form No Doubt.
