If you want to get the fastest internet speed in the U.S., your best bet is to live in Irvine.
The rapidly expanding Google Fiber network offers residents the fastest broadband in the nation. The 2018 broadband speed test by Ookla, the global leader in fixed broadband and mobile network testing, found the city’s Google Fiber network to deliver the fastest speeds of any city in America, topping San Francisco and Austin, Texas.
Google Fiber is currently available in more than 30 Irvine Company apartment communities. The service also has launched for the first time at single-family homes on the West Coast — in Orchard Hills. And Cox Communications has been upgrading its service in the area with its high-speed Gigablast offering.
Google Fiber offers Irvine residents download and upload speeds of up to 1 gigabit per second, about 40 times faster than the average internet speed in the U.S. This ultrafast connection lets you download a two-hour movie in less than 10 seconds.
“Whether you’re a student working on homework, an entrepreneur or creator running a small business from home, or a family trying to navigate the holidays with everyone watching or playing their favorite movie or game at the same time, faster internet makes it easier,” said Erin Schultz, head of Google Fiber operations in Orange County.
Google Fiber, Cox and other providers have been able to quickly deploy fiber-optic networks in Irvine because of the existing underground conduit installed over the past few decades by Irvine Company as part of its master planning process.
