Nguyen Named A Coca-Cola Academic Scholar

Alexis Nguyen was just 14 years old and a freshman at Northwood High when she began taking classes at Irvine Valley College.

“I’ve always loved immersing myself among highly motivated people and connecting with knowledgeable professors,” says Nguyen, 17, who finished high school in two years.

Now, in her second full year at IVC, Nguyen has been named a 2021 Coca-Cola Academic Team Silver Scholar. The scholarship recognizes college students who demonstrate academic excellence and intellectual rigor combined with leadership and service that benefit society.

Nguyen holds eight leadership positions at IVC, including president of the honors program student council. She also serves as one of 116 delegates at the Student Senate for California Community Colleges and on the City of Irvine’s Collegiate Student Advisory Council.

She plans to transfer to a four-year university in the fall and then go to medical school. Her experience as a junior lifeguard, helping others and witnessing how fragile life is, shaped her dream of becoming a physician, Nguyen says.

“IVC has opened so many doors for me, from leadership and research opportunities to meeting so many different people who have inspired me,” she says.

She has served the Associated Students of Irvine Valley College as senator of humanities and later as director of student advocates and activism. She founded and became president of the IVC Mental Wellness Club and is the Inter-Club Council representative for the Persian Club.

“IVC is one of the best transfer schools,” Nassab says. “I have so much support from the college. It has great professors who are truly passionate about their work.”
