UCI alumni stand out at Grammy Awards

Two graduates of UCI’s Claire Trevor School of the Arts sang on albums nominated for this year’s Grammy Awards, and one of them won.

Classical vocalist Shabnam Kalbasi, who graduated with a bachelor’s degree in music in 2010, performed as a soloist with the Los Angeles Master Chorale on “IVES: Complete Symphonies,” which won a Grammy for Best Orchestral Performance. She has performed on some of the country’s most prestigious stages, including the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and Walt Disney Concert Hall.

Multi-genre singer-songwriter G. Thomas Allen, who graduated with a Master of Fine Arts in 2014, performed on Ricky Dillard’s “Choirmaster,” nominated for Best Gospel Album. Allen’s 2020 self-titled album hit No. 1 on the iTunes charts for jazz albums.
