Irvine-based Karma Automotive has begun offering a service to convert existing commercial vans and buses into electric vehicles, allowing customers to save money and go green.

The company recently handed over its first “Powered by Karma” vehicles. Leveraging its expertise as a luxury electric car maker, Karma retrofitted three Ford E-450 shuttles used at QuikPark at LAX. The shuttles are now fully electric and create less noise and air pollution.

Thanks to electric powertrains, they can also accelerate much faster than when they were powered by gasoline and natural gas.

Karma officials say the retrofitting could be completed within days, helping commercial operators quickly electrify their fleets, and extend the life of a vehicle by up to 10 years.
