Mayor Farrah N. Khan delivered her State of the City address at Irvine Barclay Theatre, highlighting Irvine’s success even during the difficult days of the pandemic.

For example, nearly 1,700 new businesses sprung up in Irvine from July to December last year. The city now boasts more than 275,000 jobs, including manufacturing, legal, financial software, accounting, cybersecurity, and scientific and medical research. The city’s unemployment rate of 3.4% is lower than that of Orange County and California.

Khan credited the Master Plan for the city’s exceptional quality of life with “outstanding schools and higher-education institutions, beautiful parks and a wealth of jobs, shopping and dining.”

“As we reflect on our past, we recognize that what makes Irvine so special isn’t how we have changed but how we as a community have remained committed to the principles of Irvine’s Master Plan,” Khan said. “The Master Plan was a vision of a balanced community and is a living document serving as a roadmap for Irvine’s exceptional quality of life.”
