Fashion expert’s seasonal picks at local shops

The sun is shining again, which means it’s time to put away those sweaters and give your wardrobe a good spring cleaning. We asked personal shopper Sara Aplanalp for a few tips on how to step out in fashion this season.

Tell us about this year’s fabrics and colors.

There’s a lot to love in some of the new trends I’m seeing at Irvine shops. That includes some super-sheer fabrics, a lot of fringe – on dresses, tops, and even bodysuits – and a luminescent “highlighter-color” spring palette that’s heavy on bright green.

Any tips on accessories?

I’m also loving the big tote bags, the glittering metallics and the resurgence for “balletcore,” including flats and leggings you can wear in and outside the studio.

No. 1 style tip?

My best advice – always – is to wear what you love.

Moto magic - Rev up an “it girl” mainstay with this pastel vegan leather biker jacket, paired with your favorite jeans. I saw it at Kestan for $145.
Wearable art - For a touch of class in the office or out on the town, try these thick (but lightweight) “Lou Helium Hoop” earrings for $70 at Gorjana.
Right on point - Ballet flats by Linea Paolo, $120 at Nordstrom, are easy on the eyes and feet. With a fresh square-toe design, they look great with capri pants.
Tote-ally terrific - Bigger bags are fashionable again, and it’s easy to see why reviewers give this Tory Burch tote five stars. You’ll find this at Nordstrom for $448.
Precious metals - Metallics are shining on runways from Versace to Gucci. This gold belt from Anthropologie for $70 creates a cinched waist over a billowing frock or form-fitting knit dress.
To the max - Dresses are a spring staple, but what’s special now is the breezy, floor-grazing silhouette. This maxi stunner, from Free People, sells for $128.
Take a Dip - Menswear takes a cue from the fun highlighter colors we’re seeing this season. These swim trunks by Billabong are $60 at Nordstrom.
