Irvine golfer bests Tiger Woods’ record

Irvine native Rose Zhang has become the first women’s golfer in history to win back-to-back amateur titles.

Irvine native Rose Zhang has become the first women’s golfer in history to win back-to-back amateur titles. Zhang, who plays for Stanford, set the record in May when she defended her national title at the NCAA National Championship in Scottsdale, Arizona.

With the victory, Zhang, who grew up playing at Irvine’s Oak Creek Golf Club, also tied the single-season NCAA record for most wins in a season with eight.

And the records keep coming. With 12 career NCAA victories, Zhang is now the most accomplished Stanford player in history. That means she has bested another Stanford player with Orange County roots whom you may have heard of: Tiger Woods.

“She’s the absolute GOAT (greatest of all time),” Stanford coach Anne Walker told Golf Digest. “She is the best amateur of all time.”
