Athletes sign with colleges

Woodbridge High School

Three Woodbridge High seniors signed letters of intent to play collegiate sports. Football strong safety Dereck “DJ” Moore, who was named specialist MVP of the Pacific Hills League last season, will play for the University of New Mexico. Soccer standout Sabrina Go, the team’s offensive player of the year in her sophomore year, will play for Cal Poly Pomona. And water polo star Ryan DeLand, the Warriors’ leading scorer this past season, will play for Augustana College in Rock Island, Ill.

Tennis team defends title

University High School

University High’s boys tennis team is out to defend its CIF championship this year. Uni is led by captains SangHyuk Im (last year’s CIF doubles champion) and Paolo Conta, along with returning player Ani Gupta and transfers James MacDonald and Ari Lens. University opened the season with an 11-7 win over Corona del Mar and a 15-3 victory over Los Alamitos.

Baseball team seeks title

Beckman High School

Beckman High’s baseball team wants to capture the Pacific Coast League title after finishing second to Woodbridge High last season. “We have a good mix of experience and leadership,” coach Kevin Lavalle says. “We’re right in there as a team that can win league if we play well.” Beckman High was selected No. 1 in the CIF Division 3 preseason poll. Returning talent include outfielder/pitcher Carter Speights, infielder/pitcher Ashton Kanegae and infielder Marcus Ziegler. The season continues through April.
