IRVINE SPORTS ROUNDUP (April 2023)

Volleyball team wins tournament

Beckman High School

Beckman High’s boys volleyball team started the season strong, winning the Tesoro Varsity Championships. The Patriots defeated Canyon 2-0 in the quarterfinals, Mater Dei 2-0 in the semifinals and Newport Harbor 2-1 in the final. Beckman’s Ryan Graves was tournament MVP, and Luke Morrison was all-tournament. Noah Lee, Jack Graves and Noah Huang were big contributors for the Patriots, according to coach Darin McBain. Later, in their home opener, Beckman captured a nonleague victory over Mater Dei in five sets.

Joon Lee hurls no-hitter

Irvine High School

Irvine High senior Joon Lee threw a no-hitter as the Vaquero baseball team defeated Laguna Hills 2-0 in a Pacific Coast League game at Irvine, according to Vaquero coach Gabriel Cota. “Joon pitched a complete game no-hitter on 75 pitches,” Cota says. “He had seven strikeouts and faced two over the minimum.” Lee has been a key player for the Vaqueros last year and this season. “He has been nothing short of dominant this year,” Cota says.

Matt Kuromoto tough to beat

Woodbridge High School

Woodbridge High pitcher Matt Kuromoto has been tough to beat, pitching two complete games in Pacific Coast League play, both against University. After a victory over University in March, his third of the year, Kuromoto lowered his ERA to 0.56. Kuromoto, a senior, has committed to play baseball at Chapman University next year. When he doesn’t pitch, he plays either first or third base. He’s trying to help Woodbridge win its third league title in a row. “To three-peat, we just have to keep winning games,” Kuromoto says.
