Rit Mathis’ tips for stylish outdoor living areas

Rit Mathis knows home furnishings. His grandfather founded Mathis Home in 1960, and Rit joined the family business at age 14. We caught up with him at Mathis’ impressive showroom at The Market Place for some tips on how to liven up your backyard or patio this spring.

What big outdoor trend is Mathis Home embracing?

Outdoor furniture doesn’t have to look outdoorsy. We’re stocking plush upholstered sofas and chairs with treated fabric that holds up well to sun and rain and repels dirt.

What’s an easy update that doesn’t require a big commitment?

A little color goes a long way. Neutral furniture can be livened up with colorful pillows, an outdoor rug or a cheery umbrella. That way you can change the whole color scheme without breaking the bank.

What do you suggest for your more eco-conscious customers?

Furniture makers are increasingly choosing more sustainable materials – even including recycled milk jugs. As an added bonus, these “polywood” pieces won’t rot, crack or splinter and never need to be painted or stained.
