Howard Ji and Julianne Wu were among the 40 finalists in the Regeneron Science Talent Search, considered the nation’s oldest and most prestigious science and math competition for high school seniors.

For the competition, Ji created a robot to make inspections of aging bridges safer for human workers. Wu explored the effects of testosterone and estrogen on arterial tissue to examine how hormones affect cardiovascular systems.

The finalists were selected based on their projects’ scientific rigor, and their potential to become world-changing scientists and leaders. They were selected from a field of 2,162 entrants from 36 schools across 19 states.

They will participate in a weeklong contest this month and compete for $1.8 million in awards. The top 10 winners will be announced at a ceremony on March 12 in Washington, D.C.
