Irvine’s connection to groundbreaking science has been memorialized with a monument marking the spot of a historic meeting between famed innovators Albert Michelson and Albert Einstein. Michelson received the Nobel Prize in physics in 1907, making him the first American to win a Nobel Prize in science, and his measurements of light led to Einstein’s relativity theories.

The bronze plaque at 1920 Main St. marks the location where Einstein visited Michelson in 1931 to observe his ongoing experiments measuring the speed of light on The Irvine Ranch.
