High school sports roundup: No-hitters and Beckman volleyball

Baseball and softball no-hitters abound in Irvine

Irvine High School senior Drake Brito threw a no-hitter for the Vaqueros in a 4-0 Pacific Coast League baseball victory over Sage Hill.

“Drake has been absolutely solid for us all year long, and we’re so happy for him to accomplish this feat,” coach Gabriel Cota says.

Brito struck out eight and walked three to register the complete game.

Woodbridge senior Mia Tamkoc threw two no-hitters for the Warriors softball team this season: a six-inning no-hitter in a 2-0 victory over Santa Margarita in the Alan Dugard Softball Tournament and a five-inning no-hitter in a Pacific Coast League game against Northwood.

Tamkoc also pitched a four-hit shutout in Woodbridge’s 4-0 PCL victory over Irvine, improving her record to 8-6 overall. In league play, she had a record of 5-1 with a 0.60 ERA and 39 strikeouts in 34 innings heading into the final week.

“It’s just indicative of the season she’s had,” coach Jerry Rose says. “Her numbers are just incredible this year; she’s having just a great senior year.”

Memorable year for Beckman boys volleyball

Beckman High School’s boys volleyball team, coached by Darin McBain, captured the championship of the Hawaii Invitational Tournament, defeating Moanalua in the gold final, capping a successful three-day run.

“Great trip to Hawaii last week for a lot of reasons, as you can imagine,” McBain says. “Winning it for the first time was nice. We had lost in the semis to the eventual champion the last two trips out there.”

Beckman’s Josiah Suhr, a junior setter, was named tourney MVP. Teammates Jack Frame and Robert Linker were named all-tournament.

Beckman then went on to become co-champions of the South Coast League with San Clemente, earning a spot in the CIF playoffs.
