Girls hoops sets record

The Portola High School girls basketball team advanced to the semifinals in the CIF 2AA and CIF Southern Section Division II tournaments, the most successful season of any in the program’s history, coach Brian Barham says.

Portola finished the season with a record of 19-16 and was led by Nina Saiki, who averaged 12 points a game and joined the 1,000-point career mark. Other top players for the Bulldogs were Madison Nguyen, Kara Niho and Amelia Booth.

Strong start for boys tennis

University’s boys tennis team has won three consecutive CIF open division titles, and the Trojans could be in the hunt for another after winning 10 of the season’s first 11 matches.

“We have seven of nine players returning,” says coach John Kessler. “ The boys are led by our top player, sophomore Rishvanth Kusa, one of the top junior players in the nation. Arystarkh Len and JiHyuk Im, our number two and three singles players, are also back.”

Two of the three doubles teams – Cedric Lichtsteiner/Joe Chan and Langston Walter-Wu/Mimo Alajeely – also return.

Ace pitching for Warriors

Woodbridge baseball pitcher Vincent DeMarco won his first four games this season, did not allow an earned run and struck out 40 batters in 21 innings, helping the Warriors jump out to a fast start. Woodbridge looks ready to compete for a league title this season.

“If we can clean some things up on offense and be more aggressive, I think we have a pretty good chance to make a run at it,” says coach Ryan Brucker.
