Irvine sports roundup (October 2025)

Portola H.S.
Great start for flag football

Portola High’s girls flag football team jumped to a 9-2 start under coach Julie Primero. The Bulldogs won the Division 2 title at a Labor Day championship event at University.
Portola’s top players have been Amelia Atchison, Joey Nesland, Camden Everett, Sophia Reyna and Chelsea Wong.

“The girls this year have been playing their hearts out,” Primero says. “Our goals for this season are to get better each day, make CIF playoffs and make a run for the league title.”

University H.S.
Record night for kicker

University High School football player Jake Rabold had a memorable birthday as he led the Trojans to a 23-7 nonleague victory over Los Amigos at University.

“Jake had the best single-person overall performance I have ever seen,” coach Vince Mesa says.

The senior accounted for all of the Trojans’ points, with three field goals, two touchdown receptions and two extra points. The three field goals tied him with two other University players for most field goals in a game, and the 99-yard touchdown catch tied him for the longest TD play for the program since stats have been compiled in 2004. Rabold made field goals of 39, 40 and 44 yards, the most field goal total yardage for a University kicker since stats have been recorded.

Woodbridge H.S.
Pitcher heading to St. Mary’s

Warriors pitcher Vincent De Marco has made a verbal commitment to play at St. Mary’s College.

De Marco, a pitcher and first baseman, was a first-team All-Pacific Coast League player and a first-team All-CIF Division 4 selection in 2025.

He set the program’s single-season ERA record, finishing with a 0.21 ERA in 65 2/3 innings. He allowed no runs in 11 of his 13 appearances.
