New performing arts schools

Irvine enhances its reputation as a growing performing arts-education magnet with the openings of three new schools for young people.

“Talent is cultivated, voices are heard, love for music flourishes” are the watchwords at Music Around. The school, at Crossroads, merges tradition and innovation, combining classical technique, theory and repertory with contemporary improvisation, styles and self-expression. Offerings include private lessons in piano, voice, strings, guitar and drums as well as group lessons, ensembles and recitals.

The founding principle at Tutu School, also at Crossroads: Every child should know what it feels like to dance. Ballet classes for children ages 18 months to 8 emphasize creativity, movement and classical music to promote motor-skill development and nurture imaginations. UC Irvine dance alumnus Brooke Taylor Luminelli and her staff believe that swans, sugar plums and twirling should be part of any childhood.

Nine Beats Drummer Academy at Orchard Hills Shopping Center offers individual and group lessons for ages 5 and up in drums, electric, acoustic and bass guitar, rock band and music production. Founded in 2003 by acclaimed drum educator Li Hongyu, Nine Beats has trained more than 5 million students worldwide. Courses integrate digital materials and the academy’s own app. Facilities include a professional recording studio.
