Woodbridge H.S.
Warriors win CIF title

After losing its first seven games, Woodbridge’s football team finished on a hot streak and beat Montebello, 24-23, in the CIF Division 13 championship game. It was the third CIF title for the program, which had championships in 1987 and 1998, and capped a stellar season for first-year coach Connor McBride. “It’s been very exciting and an amazing feeling of hard work paying off for our kids and for our program,” McBride says.

In the final, freshman quarterback Waylon Stone rushed for 100 yards, scored two touchdowns and completed 10 passes for 118 yards. Linebacker David Bosley was named the CIF Division 13 defensive player of the year.

Beckman H.S.
Patriots nab football crown

Beckman’s CIF football championship was a special one, the first for the program.

The Patriots, led by coach Marcello Giuliano, celebrated a CIF Division 8 title after defeating Brea Olinda, 30-24, in overtime. Running back Makhi Czaykowski scored his third touchdown of the game on a 6-yard run in overtime. He finished with 115 yards on 10 carries. Patriots quarterback Noah Nam also had a big game, passing for 134 yards and rushing for 45 yards. Czaykowski was named the CIF Division 8 offensive player of the year. Patriots free safety Nathan Garcia was named the defensive player of the year.

“I’m proud of how we competed to the end,” Giuliano says.

Portola H.S.
Girls hoops aim high

Coming off the most successful season in school history, coach Brian Barham’s girls basketball team is looking for another big CIF playoff run. Portola advanced to the semifinals of the state tournament last year.

The Bulldogs are led by Madison Nguyen, who is averaging 13 points per game. Seniors Kara Niho, who is closing in on 1,000 career points, and Amelia Booth, who is averaging 11 points and 14 rebounds, are also standouts.
