Irvine native Learner Tien won the Next Gen ATP Finals, marking one of the most notable victories of his young professional career.
Held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, the event serves as the season-ending championship for the world’s top eight men’s players age 20 and under and is widely viewed as a proving ground for future tennis stars. Previous champions include current world No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz and world No. 2 Jannik Sinner.
After an opening-round loss, Tien won three consecutive matches to reach the final, where he defeated Belgium’s Alexander Blockx in straight sets.
Tien, who grew up playing at Heritage Park, turned 20 just before the tournament. He started this year at a career-high ATP singles ranking of No. 26 and became the youngest American man to reach the Australian Open quarterfinals since 2002.
