The upcoming concert “The Music of ABBA: Arrival from Sweden” features guest conductor Evan Roider leading Pacific Symphony at Great Park Live on Aug. 22. We chatted with Roider.
Why does this music work well with a full orchestra?
ABBA’s music is so well constructed to begin with that giving it the full orchestral treatment only enhances what’s already so great. It’s filled with wonderful harmonies and memorable countermelodies, and the colors of the orchestra bring those elements to life in a fresh and exciting way.
Do you have favorite ABBA songs to conduct?
Whenever I conduct a concert featuring the music of ABBA, I always look forward to “Waterloo” and “The Name of the Game.”
How does being outdoors change the vibe?
I love conducting outdoors because it removes some of the pretense that people might feel when entering a concert hall. It’s such a relaxed and welcoming environment, where everyone can feel comfortable without worrying about what to wear or when to clap.
What draws you to these genre-spanning pop concerts?
I love music that brings people together and transports audiences to a nostalgic place, and that’s exactly what ABBA’s music does. As a conductor, I enjoy knowing that people are having a great time because they’re hearing songs they love – music that takes them back to special moments and cherished memories in their lives.
