At age 13, Owen Lo is already a familiar face on the stage of Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall. The Sierra Vista Middle School eighth grader served as concertmaster for the Middle School Honor Orchestra at the Donald Bren Honors Concert – his second time in the role after first leading as an elementary student.
How did you get started playing violin?
I started in fourth grade through Irvine Unified’s music program. I always loved listening to music, but picking up the violin really sparked my interest, and I just kept going from there.
What do you enjoy most about playing?
It’s kind of a thrill. When I play, especially fast pieces, I feel really excited and happy. I love the sound and getting better every day.
How has music shaped you beyond the classroom?
Violin is a hard instrument, and I practice about two hours a day. That work carries over into other parts of my life and has made me a harder worker overall.
How has Irvine’s music program helped you grow?
I actually started because of Irvine Unified’s program. It’s great that they offer different instruments to try and also that they have honor concerts so students can perform on big stages.
What does it mean to you to be concertmaster?
There’s a lot of responsibility in leading the orchestra, but I trust everyone because they all work hard. I enjoy being able to help the group and perform with these amazing musicians.
