Q&A: Making free connections across the community

Getting around town has never been easier, cheaper or more convenient with Irvine Connect. The free shuttle service between Irvine’s north end and Irvine Station began as a pilot program in 2024. This year, it plans to expand its fleet and potentially its range. The popular program offers roughly 85 stops that include Irvine Spectrum Center, parks, schools, hospitals and a senior center.

Richard Parker, who has driven for Irvine Connect for more than a year, feels genuinely excited to arrive at work each day. He shares what makes this program special.

What’s contributing to the program’s growing popularity?
People are taken aback that it’s free. They always try to pay. With gas prices rising every week and parking getting more difficult, it’s a great community service.

Who’s your average rider?
We serve all ages. We take students to school, then see them on the weekends going to Spectrum Center. It gives them independence. Some regulars ride to the senior center for lunch or to meet friends. People commute from Irvine Station to work.

Most popular stops?
Irvine Spectrum Center. It offers so much – shopping, restaurants and movies – and they keep it fresh by always bringing in new eateries. People also love Zion Market in Northwood. I drop them off and, by the time I circle the loop, they’ve finished shopping, and I drive them home.

When does the shuttle run?
Weekdays from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. and weekends from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Shuttles run every 20 minutes.
