Drive-in fun at Irvine Spectrum Center

Thousands of families and friends have flocked to Irvine Spectrum Center this summer to enjoy hit movies and live stand-up comedy from the comfort of their car.

They laughed, screamed and cried watching classic films like “Jurassic Park” and “The Goonies” on a giant 50-foot screen that could be seen from every corner atop the Regal Edwards parking deck. They were even treated with a panoramic sunset view while they munched on snacks and dinner.

In June, Spectrum staff came up with the idea of turning a parking deck into a drive-in venue in hopes of providing fun summer nights for residents who were stuck at home.

What resulted was a series of sold-out movie nights in July and August, which have been extended into September.

Irvine Improv’s Live Comedy Drive-In Series at the parking deck is also selling out. Comedians feed off of the crowd’s energy, which they say isn’t possible through online streaming.

The shows at the Spectrum Center have been so popular that the owner of Irvine Improv plans to host similar outdoor events at its other clubs, according to the Orange County Register.
