Named for its vibrant hue and face-like flowers, the scarlet monkeyflower (Erythranthe cardinalis) is a herbaceous perennial that grows large and spreads. It is found naturally near creeks and springs in the Southwest and does well in areas that are moist or wet. It can be planted in full sun but prefers partial shade and does very well in containers. Scarlet monkeyflower produces nectar-rich orange to red flowers that bloom from spring into fall. The foliage is also attractive, with its downy, fuzzy appearance.
