5 teachers honored for leading arts

Five Irvine Unified School District teachers have been recognized for contributions to arts education.

Alicia Parker won the Orange County Outstanding Arts Educator Award in the category of elementary visual arts; Katie Derus was an honoree for the Julianna McGrath Memorial Award for elementary teaching; Quiana Arguelles was nominated in the category of elementary vocal music; Rosemary Montgomery was nominated in the category of secondary vocals; and Kearci Thompson was nominated in the category of secondary visual arts.

The awards honor teachers demonstrating outstanding commitment, innovation and excellence in fostering artistic development among students.

They are given by the Orange County Music and Arts Administrators, a coalition of school officials, parents and business leaders dedicated to promoting arts education in classrooms.
