Construction is underway on a new UC Irvine research facility to develop treatments for some of society’s most complex illnesses.

The 200,000-square-foot Falling Leaves Foundation Medical Innovation Building will be part of the university’s health sciences district along Michael Drake Drive and feature state-of-the-art teaching space and labs.

Each floor will be reserved for researching specific health issues, including cancer, Alzheimer’s disease and vision loss, while findings will be transformed into more effective tools to prevent illness and treat disease, according to UC Irvine officials.

The facility’s design and construction is funded through a $30 million gift from the Falling Leaves Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to promoting advances in medical research founded by UCLA Professor Emeritus Robert A. Mah and Dr. Adeline Yen Mah.

The building is projected to be complete by April 2025.
