Hoag celebrates milestone in $1 billion Irvine expansion

Hoag recently celebrated a milestone in its $1 billion Irvine expansion with a topping-off ceremony at its Sand Canyon Avenue campus.

Physicians, employees and leaders gathered to sign the final beam before it was hoisted into place, symbolizing the completion of the structural phase of the Surgical Pavilion.

The pavilion will feature 24 acuity-adaptable ICU patient rooms, 12 private pre- and post-operative rooms, 12 post-anesthesia care unit bays, eight operating rooms and two procedure rooms.

“This project is going to bring residents the type of care that they haven’t had in Irvine, ever,” says Andrew Guarni, executive vice president and chief financial officer at Hoag.

Slated to open in early 2026, the Surgical Pavilion represents one of six new buildings adding a combined 155 inpatient beds and 120,000 square feet of ambulatory facilities.

The expansion will create a new Sun Family Campus, named in tribute to a $50 million gift by Diana and David Sun, co-founders of Kingston technology company.

The Surgical Pavilion will have an underground connection to the new specialty care pavilions for women’s health, cancer and digestive health that are also under construction. Outdoor spaces interwoven throughout the campus will offer patients and visitors the healing elements of nature and moments of rest.

Guarni highlighted his enthusiasm for the new women’s health center, emphasizing its patient-centric features.

“What we’re going to do in women’s health is going to be new to this area. We’re setting up rooms so moms can FaceTime and share videos with loved ones who can’t be there. Whether they want to give birth in a tub, with a doula, or a midwife, all those services will be available in one place. We listened to what patients wanted – more outlets, connectivity, and the ability to plug in multiple devices and connect with family seamlessly. We’re proud to deliver on these requests.”
