Cassie Parham was named superintendent of Irvine Unified School District in April to succeed Terry Walker, who retired this year. An Irvine Unified graduate herself, she began her career teaching English at University High. Parham shares insights on her role and vision for the district’s future.

What inspired you to pursue a career in education?
My parents were educators, and I had the privilege of teaching in the same University High classroom that my father, Jack, taught in after he helped open the school as an English teacher and football coach. My mother, Tammy, was Oak Creek Elementary’s first principal. As a product of Irvine schools, I experienced firsthand how a teacher can shape a student by instilling confidence and hope. As a child, I learned that teachers can empower their students. As an adult, I learned that education is the most powerful profession in the world.

What are your top priorities?
Striving for academic excellence, removing barriers to ensure educational equity and attending to the well-being of our students are my top priorities as superintendent. Providing students with a strong foundation is essential for them to cultivate the skills, knowledge and attitudes for success in college, career and life.

What is your leadership philosophy?
It’s rooted in a spirit of continuous improvement and a deep respect for Irvine’s culture. We have never been content to rest on our laurels, and we are committed to meeting the evolving needs of our students and preparing them for the future. From my experience as a student, teacher and administrator, I understand the value of a culture rooted in integrity, trustworthiness, collaboration, empowerment and learning.

Do you have any new initiatives you’re planning to launch?
Some of the most important ones include: centering exemplary instruction, expanding mental health support for our students, removing barriers, and harnessing the power of technology and artificial intelligence to personalize educational experiences for all students while creating efficiencies for teachers and staff.

Any important news for students and families?
IUSD is very appreciative that the Irvine Company and the City have identified a school site as part of a new master planned village in the Spectrum District. This new school will be designed to accommodate future student needs in the area and I look forward to collaborating with the school board, my colleagues at IUSD, the community, the city and Irvine Company as the plan advances.
