New SunWheel on the horizon

The new Spectrum SunWheel is coming to Irvine Spectrum Center this summer. Like its predecessor, it was handcrafted in Casale di Scodosia, Italy – an area just south of Venice famous for its specialized amusement ride manufacturers.

The original Giant Wheel was installed in the summer of 2002, after traveling three weeks from Italy. It took eight weeks to assemble and adorn with 12,500 red, white and blue lights.

In 2015, the original standard light bulbs were replaced with 52,000 energy-efficient LED lights. Now, after a generation made memories riding the original, it’s a new era in the air for the SunWheel. The new wheel is being installed and is expected to debut next month.
