New dessert destinations with a difference

Whimsical furnishings such as chairs with backs resembling giant white Life Savers candies are reason enough to peek in at University Center’s Owly Dessert Shoppe. But freshly made crepes and bubble tea are why you stay. The first letters of the four signature crepe cones spell OWLY: Old school, Whimsical, Luminous and Yes to all. The first brings custard, strawberry, banana, vanilla ice cream, Nutella and creme brulee.

Chocolate addicts alert. Chocolate Bash brings its spectacular all-sweets Bash Burger and other distinctive treats, such as the Dubai brownie and cookie-butter knafeh cup, to Irvine Spectrum Center. Feeling creative? Choose a base, perhaps crepuccini, croffle or the sampler plate. Add drizzles such as pistachio cream, Belgian white chocolate or blueberry spread. Finish with intriguing toppings, including the elaborate Bash Shot mix.

Globally popular Mixue Ice Cream & Tea is based in China. Its name translates to “honey snow ice city.” Mixue’s 60,000 locations make it the world’s largest food chain. The Quail Hill Shopping Center spot is among the first in the U.S., after Los Angeles and New York. No item runs more than $5; soft-serve is $1.19. “Snow King” favorites include fresh lemonade, pearl milk tea, sundaes and coffee.
