Finding the right summer camp for kids often means choosing between sports, science or the arts. However, UC Irvine offers parents a single place that checks multiple boxes with youth programs focused on hands-on activities, playing outside and building confidence.
Run by UCI Campus Recreation, the programs are split into variety and specialty camps. Variety camps let kids try many activities throughout the week, including art, science, cooking, swimming and climbing a rock wall. Specialty camps allow campers to spend the whole week on one interest, such as cooking, racket sports, outdoor adventure or leadership.
Most activities take place in and around the 89,000-square-foot Anteater Recreation Center. Campers get to use the same amenities the university students use, including a kitchen classroom, manicured grass fields, a pool and a high ropes course with a zip line.
UC Irvine students work as counselors to guide the younger campers. Stephie Daquioag, program director for youth camps, says the activities are carefully planned to help kids learn how to be respectful, work as a team and speak up for themselves while having fun.
“I just want them to know that this is a safe place where they can be themselves and that they can grow and they can build that confidence in them,” Daquioag says.
Hosting these camps is a key part of the university’s mission to serve the community, Daquioag says. By opening its doors to the public, UC Irvine aims to provide an environment where all families feel like they belong.
The program also creates a win-win in that children find mentors in college students, and those students gain valuable leadership and teaching experience, Daquioag says.
