Laser-focused on the future

A laser X-ray sounds like something from a James Bond movie. But Lumitron is developing this futuristic technology right here in Irvine.

A laser X-ray sounds like something from a James Bond movie.

But Lumitron is developing this futuristic technology right here in Irvine.

And the company is growing.

It recently expanded its offices in UCI Research Park by about 50%.

The 175-acre research park is strategically located adjacent to UCI to promote collaboration between businesses and the university.

“UCI is easily as entrepreneurial as Stanford,” said Chris Barty, a UCI professor, co-founder of Lumitron and a Stanford grad. “Having the medical school across the street is a wonderful synergy for the company. This is a wonderful environment.”

As for the laser, it can create X-ray images with 100 times less radiation than current technology. Lumitron recently secured $34 million in funding to advance its technologies.
