If you’re a naturalist but not much for hiking, there are plenty of options on The Irvine Ranch land. Every month, you’ll find events that focus on plants, birds, bats, meditation, art and more. Visit letsgooutside.org for a complete list. Here are some of the programs offered this month.
Art in the Canyon: Watercolor Landscape
Berns Canyon Preserve, 9-10 a.m. Sept. 3
You’ll learn how to sketch, layer color with pencils, then activate the pigment with water to create soft, painterly effects. Understand basic techniques like shading, blending and creating texture, all while working on a simple, scenic landscape. No experience is necessary – just bring your curiosity and creativity.
Birding Using the Power of Sound
Bommer Canyon, 7:30-9:30 a.m. Sept. 5
Learn how to identify birds by the pitch, tone and pattern of their songs and calls at Bommer Canyon’s Cattle Camp, home to a rich variety of birds. Immerse yourself in audible nature on a slow, short walk on a hard-packed dirt trail, delighting in your new ability to recognize our feathered friends through their vocalizations. Binoculars optional.
Bats: Heroes of the Night
Limestone Canyon, 6:15-8:15 p.m. Sept. 5
Prepare to hear amazing tales about these flying mammals. Learn why bats are crucial to the health of our ecosystem. A guide will take you just half a mile to a nighttime roosting area beneath a bridge. As day turns to night, you’ll watch as bats streak into the evening sky. Bat detectors are available to hear their high-frequency calls. Great for kids ages 5-12.
Nature Meditation
Nix Nature Center, 8-10 a.m. Sept. 13
Craving serenity? Consider joining volunteers on this meander of less than a mile, during which you’ll stop often to participate in mindfulness exercises and soak in the peaceful surroundings. Enjoy the soothing sounds, scents and sights of nature with a small group of fellow mellow meditators. End with a tea ceremony.
Guided Tide–pool Walks
Crystal Cove, monthly
Tide-pool walks and talks are scheduled throughout the year, led by state park interpreters and Crystal Cove Conservancy naturalists who help you identify sea stars, anemones and hermit crabs, just a few of the many creatures that love to live among the rocks. During your outdoor adventure, enjoy the briny sea air and the sight of the sparkling Pacific Ocean.
