History buffs, Bommer Canyon has something for you. Years ago, thousands of cattle roamed The Irvine Ranch and were rounded up at the site of today’s Cattle Camp. It’s even been suggested that the name Bommer is a corruption of the term “bummer,” describing an abandoned calf.
Now the location, with its barn-red buildings authentically restored to reflect Old West themes, attracts thousands of people every year. It’s the locus for several trails leading into the canyon, as well as a place that families and friends can reserve to celebrate milestones such as birthdays, anniversaries and weddings. Irvine Company hosts several free events each year as part of its commitment to introduce residents to the wonders of this expansive wilderness area so close to their homes.
Bucolic and serene, the area features dozens of picnic tables shaded by mature sycamore trees. There’s a catering kitchen and even a bridal suite. Whether you enjoy yoga beneath the fluttering leaves or dancing to a boisterous bluegrass band at the Cattle Camp, the options are plentiful at Bommer Canyon.
