Toyota-backed ‘robotaxi’ to test cars in Irvine

The DMV has granted permission to Pony.ai, a Toyota-backed “robotaxi” company, to conduct tests on Irvine roads.

The DMV has granted permission to Pony.ai, a Toyota-backed “robotaxi” company, to conduct tests on Irvine roads. Six autonomous vehicles will be allowed to operate between the hours of 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. at speeds of 45 mph or less, weather permitting.

While Pony.ai has had state authority to test autonomous vehicles with safety drivers since 2017, the new permit allows the company to test six autonomous vehicles without a driver behind the wheel on specified streets, the DMV announced in May.
