City event tests new protected bike lanes

A proposal to create new protected bike lanes along South Yale Avenue is moving forward. The plan will create bike lanes in both directions on roadway stretching about a half-mile between University Drive and I-405. A grass median with plants and trees could separate cyclists from traffic.

City officials hosted a recent event for residents to view preliminary plans, test a temporary cycle track and share feedback. Once built, the lanes would be the first of their kind in Irvine. Yale Avenue was selected for its location near parks and trails, city officials say. Engineering plans are now being developed and will be submitted for City Council approval.
